What is the AI Supercomputing initiative Brabant?
The AI Supercomputing Initiative Brabant is a regional collaboration designed to make high performance computing power (AI supercomputing) accessible to companies and institutions in the Dutch province of Brabant. Its core mission is to enable the development of impactful AI by removing technical, organizational, and knowledge-related barriers that currently prevent many organisations from leveraging advanced computing infrastructure.
At its heart, the initiative is a support ecosystem, not just a technical platform. It combines:
- Access to powerful AI infrastructure, starting with TU/e’s Spike-A supercomputer and expanding to national and European platforms like EuroHPC and the AI Factory NL.
- Hands-on guidance and expertise, helping organizations transition from small-scale computing (e.g. laptops) to high-performance AI workloads.
- Smart tooling and tailored support, including help with code optimization, data management, and navigating legal and ethical considerations.
- A vibrant community, where knowledge is shared openly through events, training, and a public knowledge base.

The initiative is led by four founding partners: Province of North Brabant, Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), Tilburg University, and Brabant Development Agency (BOM). It targets both Brabant-based companies, especially startups, scale-ups, and SMEs, and institutions such as universities, hospitals, municipalities, and water authorities.
Rather than offering a one-size-fits-all solution, the initiative follows a four-step journey for participants:
- Awareness – Helping organizations recognize the potential of AI supercomputing.
- Information – Providing tailored advice and use case exploration.
- Realisation – Supporting actual workloads on supercomputing infrastructure.
- Dissemination – Sharing results and best practices to inspire others.
Ultimately, the initiative aims to spark a flywheel effect: building confidence, expertise, and momentum so that Brabant becomes a leading European region for responsible and high-impact AI development.
Learnings so far
The AI Supercomputing Initiative Brabant is the result of a growing regional ambition to make high-performance computing accessible for impactful AI development. In 2024, the founding partners formalized their collaboration by signing a Letter of Intent (LOI), marking the start of a joint commitment to remove barriers to AI supercomputing.
Since then, the initiative has conducted roundtable sessions, public presentations, and proof-of-concept (PoC) pilots with a diverse group of Brabant-based companies. These activities have revealed several key insights:
- Latent demand is real: Many organizations are unaware of the potential of AI supercomputing or lack the capacity to act on it. Once introduced to the possibilities, interest and engagement grow rapidly.
- Barriers are consistent: Lack of technical expertise, limited infrastructure, and uncertainty about data governance are recurring challenges.
- Community matters: Early efforts to build a knowledge-sharing ecosystem have shown that peer learning, open innovation, and structured support accelerate adoption and build trust.
