#  BECC Flex: flexible energy systems at Bio Energy Central Cuijk

 Bio Energy Central Cuijk (BECC) and BOM are jointly investing in flexible energy systems.

The construction of solar parks and wind turbines is going well. So well that in the sunny spring of 2023, as much as 58 percent of the used electricity was sustainably generated. However, because electricity production from renewable sources like sun and wind depends on the season and weather, grid operators need other electricity producers who can quickly switch based on supply and demand so that there is no shortage or surplus of electricity on the network.

### BECC Energy Hub

Due to the imbalance in the electricity grid, there is an increasing need for energy storage. This can be done with various technologies. For example, a large battery system and an e-boiler were recently installed at BECC. With this, the energy storage project contributes to the balance of the Dutch electricity grid, one of the major issues in the integration of sustainable production sources. BECC thus becomes a so-called Energy Hub.

“We believe in BECC as an Energy Hub and we expect a lot from it,” says Koen den Houting, Investment Manager Renewable Energy at BOM. “Stimulating the energy transition is one of our tasks. BECC Energy Hub will be one of the first storage projects to become operational, something we as BOM need to support.”

### High ambitions

This collaboration with BECC is a great step, according to Den Houting, but we are far from there yet: “To keep the electricity grid in balance, we need hundreds more of such projects.” The reality, however, is that they are quite difficult to get off the ground; there are quite a few hurdles to overcome, such as in the issuance of permits, but also financially. Den Houting: “BOM supports projects like BECC Energy Hub with advice and financial resources to show the market that energy storage really works.”
