'Here we find the technical talent we need'

Entrepreneurial story
Delta, founded in 1971 in Taipei, is a world leader in power and thermal management solutions. The company offers a wide range of products and is active in many industries.

For instance, Delta is the world's largest provider of cooling fans and switching power supplies for TVs and laptops. But the company also develops inverters for solar panels and plays a leading role in the market for so-called PLCs, industrial computers used, for example, to control production machines.

Sustainability is central to everything Delta does. Tim Lee, General Manager of the Industrial Automation business group for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA), says: "We use our competencies in electronics and automation to develop innovative, clean, and energy-efficient solutions that contribute to a better future."

Brainport Eindhoven

Delta feels at home in the Netherlands. The EMEA headquarters for the entire group is located in Hoofddorp; Eindhoven is home to the EMEA headquarters of Industrial Automation, which focuses on automation solutions for smart factories. In 2000, the business group opened its first EMEA branch in Venlo, Limburg. Five years later, they moved to Eindhoven. Here, the company engages in sales and marketing, product support, and R&D to deliver customer-specific configurations.

According to Lee, there were many reasons to choose Brainport Eindhoven. "Brabant is an international hotspot," Lee says. "It has a thriving technology ecosystem with the High Tech Campus and companies like Philips and ASML. Moreover, Eindhoven has a good airport and—thanks to the nearby universities—it's a great place to recruit staff. The presence of technical talent is very important for the future of our company."

We want to play a leading role in the development of sustainable solutions for smart cities, and all the ingredients are present here to make this possible.

Start of the construction

The company has ambitious plans for Brabant. In the fall of 2019, the construction of the new office began at the Automotive Campus in Helmond. The building covers approximately 4,000 square meters - more than three times the size of the current location in Eindhoven – and accommodates up to 150 people. Besides Industrial Automation, the location will also support other business groups, including Automotive Electronics.

At the Automotive Campus, more than 1,250 people are involved in developing mobility solutions for the future. Delta aims to play an active role in the local ecosystem. "This truly fits into Delta's larger vision of developing smart solutions that contribute to energy efficiency and CO2 reduction in cities worldwide," said Lee. "We look forward to developing and testing new applications and technologies together with other companies on or near the campus."

Delta EMEA Smarter. Greener. Together

Delta Electronics in numbers

  • Founded: 1971
  • Employees: 87,000
  • Revenue: $9 billion in 2018
  • Activities in Brabant: headquarters of the Industrial Automation division for the EMEA region. The new location in Helmond also supports other activities and product groups of Delta such as charging solutions for electric cars.
  • Employees in Brabant: 40-45 FTE, which can eventually increase to 150 in Helmond.

Test lab for green mobility

A good example is the test lab for green mobility being developed next to the new building. Delta will use the 1,300 square meter parking lot to test its electric car charging solutions along with other companies on campus.

Moreover, Lee is very enthusiastic about the collaboration opportunities with technical education in the region: “There are 600 students on the campus in Helmond. The engineering program of Summa College is right next to us. The Technical University of Eindhoven (TU/e) and the automation faculty of Fontys University of Applied Sciences are also nearby - and the University of Aachen is just across the border with Germany.”

A warm relationship

Delta has been collaborating with the BOM since the beginning of this century. "They helped us find our first building in Eindhoven, and since then we have maintained a warm relationship," says Lee. “When we wanted to expand, they introduced us to the Automotive Campus and provided us with information about local regulations and opportunities. They also arranged a visit from the mayor of Eindhoven to our headquarters in Taiwan, and through BOM we got in touch with a research program for green mobility at TU/e, which we now sponsor. For us, the BOM is the regional matchmaker. They have a very good network, both here and in Taiwan.”
