Supercomputing in Brabant: Start of exploratory phase for innovative cooperation

November 7, 2024
The province of Noord-Brabant, the Brabant Development Agency (BOM), Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), and Tilburg University are exploring how they can offer advanced computing power to companies and institutions in Brabant. The initiative particularly focuses on applications in artificial intelligence (AI) and Big Data. To this end, the parties signed a declaration of intent today.

Strategic Importance of Supercomputing in Brabant

Supercomputing plays a key role in the competitive position of Brabant, as a technologically innovative and economically leading region. It provides computing power for fast-growing technologies such as AI and Big Data and enhances the regional business climate for innovative companies and talent. The collaboration between the province, BOM, TU/e, and Tilburg University is primarily aimed at enabling companies in Brabant to access supercomputing facilities of the highest quality. The intended basis of the collaboration is the new modular supercomputer of the TU/e, potentially with expansion, depending on the outcome of the exploration.

Support by the Province, BOM, TU/e, and Tilburg University

The signing took place at the AI Summit Brainport in the Evoluon in Eindhoven, where Martijn van Gruijthuijsen (province of North Brabant), Brigit van Dijk – van de Reijt (BOM), Patrick Groothuis (TU/e), and Wilma de Koning (Tilburg University) signed the agreement. This marks the start of an exploratory phase, where, together with the business community, it will be examined how supercomputing can best be structured and implemented. The ultimate aim is a collaboration agreement and a detailed implementation plan for broad access to advanced computing power in Brabant.

CEO BOM

The province of North Brabant will play a facilitating and potentially financing role in this collaboration. The BOM uses its experience and (international) network to promote the adoption of advanced computing facilities and thus build a strong ecosystem. TU/e applies its in-depth expertise in large-scale computational processes and explores opportunities to expand its new AI supercomputing facilities. Tilburg University supports companies by guiding them in the effective and responsible use of computing facilities, with attention to compliance with ethical, legal, and social aspects.
