LionVolt: the super battery of the future comes from Eindhoven

Entrepreneurial story
Batteries play a crucial role in a sustainable energy system. They not only absorb peaks and troughs in energy production, but are also indispensable in electric transportation. Worldwide, numerous companies are working on the battery of the future, such as the Eindhoven-based LionVolt. Thanks in part to the Brabant Development Agency (BOM), this startup can accelerate the development of its revolutionary battery.

The new generation of batteries is better in several ways than the current lithium-ion batteries. They are lighter, safer, charge faster, and store more energy. New battery technologies not only play a role in the storage of green energy. The automotive industry can also truly electrify on a large scale with a new generation of batteries. Because they charge faster, have a higher range, and are less harmful to the environment. LionVolt's innovative technology could very well accelerate this. Major players in the automotive industry are looking at LionVolt with great interest.

The technique

LionVolt is a spin-off of TNO. TNO developed a revolutionary 3D battery technology at Holst Center, where thin film layers are applied to metal foil using nanotechnology. LionVolt uses this technology for the development of its innovative battery. It is not only better but also safer, as it cannot catch fire unlike current batteries. The technology also contributes to lower production costs, making the deployment of batteries financially more attractive.

A scalable production line

In 2021, LionVolt raised four million euros from, among others, Innovation Industries, BOM, and Sake Bosch. BOM invests in LionVolt because the company has enormous potential and because it seamlessly fits BOM's focus on driving innovations in battery storage.

Brabant suppliers

Almost 80 percent of the technology needed to build a production line for the new battery can be made in Brainport. There is a significant role for Brabant suppliers such as the BOM portfolio company SparkNano, which makes machines that produce the battery's thin layers. By utilizing the relevant knowledge and expertise in Brainport, LionVolt can realize a scalable production line in a short period.

Venture building by BOM

To ultimately find the way to the user, market knowledge is needed in addition to the development of technology and capital. BOM plays a role in this with a methodology aimed at guiding innovative companies to the next phase of their existence: venture building. BOM intensively guided LionVolt with the development plan and brought focus to the activities. This includes the market segment the company should target, the aspects the company should work on, and the evidence needed to gain the trust of new investors.

Going from concept to market takes years and is often a capital-intensive process, especially when a company wants to scale up. BOM wants startups developing promising, climate-neutral solutions to grow into successful companies. This way, they make a significant contribution to the economy and employment in North Brabant. In this way, BOM has already helped more than six hundred impactful companies over the past few years.

Future

By early 2024, LionVolt aims to deliver the first samples to a select group of clients in the market for, among others, watches and small medical devices. Their experiences form the next step towards a market-ready battery. LionVolt plans to begin testing with electric cars at a later stage.
