Public development company aims for local ownership and local revenues in wind and solar parks

July 19, 2023
The Energiefonds Brabant (managed by BOM) is going to develop wind and solar parks together with the municipalities of Dongen, Gilze-Rijen, Goirle, Heusden, Loon op Zand, Oisterwijk, and Tilburg to generate sustainable electricity. For this purpose, the Publiek Ontwikkelbedrijf REKS B.V. (‘Public Development Company’) was established in July 2023.

The Public Development Company originates from the Regional Energy and Climate Strategy (REKS). In this, municipalities, water boards, and the province of North Brabant have made plans for the generation of sustainable electricity in 'energy hubs', or large-scale wind and/or solar parks.

We want to make the transition to renewable energy as soon as possible. We do this by taking the initiative in the development of wind and solar farms. This way, we can better manage citizen participation and ensure at least 50 percent local ownership. This means that residents and businesses in the region benefit maximally from the energy generation.
Rik Grashoff, alderman in Tilburg and chairman of the Stuurgroep Publiek Ontwikkelbedrijf

Regional Energy and Climate Strategy Region Heart of Brabant

The Regional Energy and Climate Strategy (RECS) outlines how and where energy can be saved and sustainably generated in Heart of Brabant, and how we can adapt our environment to the changing climate. They do this with care for nature and our landscape, so that we can live and work pleasantly and safely, now and in the future.

In the RECS, they strive for at least 50 percent local ownership in projects for generating sustainable energy. This means that residents can actually have a say, participate, and benefit from the operation of the energy hubs. For more information, visit regio-hartvanbrabant.nl/reks.
